<p>The path of the full annular eclipse crossed mostly open ocean in the southern part of the globe, starting about 560 miles (900 kilometers) south of Africa and not reaching land until it crossed Australia&#8217;s Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean (see map).</p>
<p>Still, observers in southern Africa, Madagascar, Australia, and Southeast Asia were able to watch a partial eclipse.</p>

January 26, 2009&#8211;The dark disk of the moon creeps across the setting sun during the first solar eclipse of 2009, as seen on Monday from Manila Bay in the Philippines.<br />
People viewing from the southern Indian Ocean were among the few to see the full annular eclipse, so called because at its peak the eclipse is surrounded by an annulus, or ring, of fiery light.<br />
Because the moon&#8217;s orbit is elliptical, its distance from Earth&#8211;and thus its apparent size&#8211;varies over time. Annular eclipses happen when the moon looks too small to completely cover the sun, an event that occurs about 66 times a century.</p>

<p>The image was captured from Anyer Beach on the Indonesian island of Java, one of the few places where the solar eclipse was completely visible.</p>
<p>Crowds gathered across Indonesia to witness the event, some cheering and banging drums as the moon seemed to cross the face of the sun, the Associated Press reported.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m old, but I still think this is magical,&#8221; resident Roanna Makmur, 66, told the AP. &#8220;Anyone who passed up this opportunity really missed out.&#8221;</p>

<p>Sebagai akibatnya, kemungkinan Bima Sakti bertabrakan dengan galaksi<br />
lain semakin besar, demikian menurut sebuah laporan yang disiarkan<br />
Senin.</p>
<p>Sebuah tim astronom internasional, dengan bantuan 10 teleskop yang<br />
tersebar di antara Hawaii, Karibia dan AS timurlaut, memastikan bahwa<br />
Bima Sakti berputar pada kecepatan 161.000 kilometer per jam lebih<br />
cepat daripada yang dibayangkan sebelumnya.</p>
<p>Naiknya kecepatan meningkatkan massa Bima Sakti dengan 50 persen,<br />
kata Mark Reid, dari Pusat Astrofisika Harvard-Smithsonian, dalam<br />
riset yang disampaikan pada pertemuan Masyarakat Astronomi Amerika<br />
pada pekan ini di Long Beach, California.</p>
<p>&#8220;Kita tak akan lagi berpikir bahwa Bima Sakti adalah adik Galaksi<br />
Andromeda,&#8221; kata Reid dalam sebuah pernyataannya, seperti dikutip AFP.</p>
<p>Namun demikian, massa yang lebih besar itu juga berarti bahwa Bima<br />
Sakti memiliki tarikan gravitasi yang lebih besar, sehingga<br />
meningkatkan kemungkinan bertabrakan dengan Galaksi Andromeda atau<br />
galaksi-galaksi yang lebih kecil di dekatnya, katanya.</p>
<p>Pengukuran baru</p>
<p>Sistem tata surya tempat Bumi menjadi salah satu anggota keluarganya<br />
jaraknya sekitar 28.000 tahun cahaya dari pusat Bima Sakti.</p>
<p>Pada kejauhan ini, pengukuran baru memperlihatkan bahwa galaksi itu<br />
berputar dengan kecepatan 965.000 kilometer per jam, dibandingkan<br />
dengan perkiraan sebelumnya 804,672 kilometer per jam, ujar para<br />
astronom.</p>
<p>Pangamatan baru dari jaringan teleskop radio itu &#8220;menghasilkan<br />
pengukuran langsung yang lebih akurat mengenai jarak dan gerakan<br />
mereka,&#8221; kata Karl Menten dari Institut Astronomi Radio Max Planck di<br />
Jerman, anggota tim tersebut.</p>
<p>&#8220;Pengukuran ini menggunakan metode triangulasi surveyor tradisional<br />
dan tidak tergantung apa asumsi apapun yang didasarkan pada hal lain,<br />
seperti kecemerlangan,&#8221; ujar Menten.</p>
<p>Pengukuran langsung ini &#8220;merevisi pemahaman kita atas struktur dan<br />
gerakan Galaksi kita,&#8221; kata Menten.</p>
<p>Sulit untuk memastikan struktur Bima Sakti karena Bumi berada di<br />
dalamnya. &#8220;Untuk galaksi lainnya, kita dapat dengan mudah melihat<br />
mereka dan melihat strukturnya, namun kita tak bisa melakukan hal ini<br />
untuk mendapatkan citra secara keseluruhan Bima Sakti, kata Menten.</p>
<p>&#8220;Kita harus menarik kesimpulan strukturnya dengan mengukur dan<br />
